It is undoubtedly clear that culture has been perceived as the different ways groups of people live their life. In the same manner, religion has been noted to be the belief in the existence of a Supreme Being or even gods and
all the activities connected to worship of them. Notably, the right to religion and worship is a prerogative of every person.
As we all know, there are diverse religious in our country Nigeria and If someone believes in a God or gods he/she owe their being and existence in that God or gods. People still wonder why groups take every possible action and sometimes extreme ones with the aim of upholding their religion or belief. This situation springs an important question; since there are diverse cultures and religions in Nigeria, does it bring about unity or disunity? This question therefore brings about our theme CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY: A cause of unity or disunity in Nigeria.
Culture and Religion are equal and opposite. They are equal in the sense that they both the society and oneself.
They are opposite because there are some things custom demands that are not accepted by some religious groups. Sequel to this, it presents to us a portrait which portrays a situation whereby different groups have different ways of living and also different ways of worship.
No doubt that the right to religion is a prerogative to every person and whatever religion one chooses. One conforms to its tenets since this would lead one to the source of existence, but whether extremism in that one’s chosen religion is justified and yet it is another problem that troubles the mind.
In Nigeria today the Boko Harm sect upholds a different belief, taking every necessary action to uphold the tenets of their belief. As we all know that this sect is strongly against the western education. Due to their different belief and the way they live their life, it has brought enmity between them and the country. You wont blame them because it is as pellucid as crystal, which one is entitled to ones religion and should uphold its tenets. The Question is; Is this act of fundamentalism still justified, ipso facto, they are only obeying what their religious tenets require of them?
